6 Key Factors To Convert Your Home Into A Sustainable Space

Convert Your Home Into A Sustainable Space

A Home That Respects The Environment Doesn't Leave Issues Such As The Reuse Of Materials, Water And Energy Consumption, Or Decoration To Chance

To make a home a sustainable space that respects the environment, it is not necessary to give up comfort or customs. The lifestyle that is beginning to emerge in our society shows that reducing energy consumption, reusing water or recycling plastics are the foundations on which the home of a future that is already here is based.

CyberHut is an example of sustainable, intelligent, and self-sufficient housing, designed to solve the problems and challenges that will be faced in an increasingly near future. ““Caring for the environment is in our hands and choosing a sustainable home is another way of being less polluting”, explains David Ceballos, CEO of the project.

To make a house a space adapted to current changes and needs, experts warn that different essential elements must be taken into account. Below you can find the main ones.

1. Good Insulation

Adequate insulation will generate a more energy-efficient space and, in addition, will reduce light or noise pollution caused by artificial light and excessive noise from the streets.

Likewise, (quality) insulation must be present not only on the facades but also on doors, windows, and the floor. This avoids wasting energy, so much less will be needed to heat or cool the house. This, in turn, will make it easier for the home to depend only on green energy, thus reducing the electricity bill.

2. Self-sufficiency

To reduce the environmental impact and energy consumption different methods can be implemented to generate green energy. Among them are geothermal systems, which take advantage of the temperature of the subsoil under the house; solar thermal energy, which uses plates filled with a liquid that is heated by the sun; or biomass energy generation systems, widely used in pellet boilers.

However, the most common are high-performance solar panels, because with them the house does not need to be connected to the traditional electrical network.

3. Second Life To Organic Residues

We must not forget the rules of the three Rs, where reducing and recycling is just as important as reusing. This last verb can be applied in the same way to the organic waste that we generate in our homes every day. Through composting, the process with which organic matter is transformed into fertilizer, we can use waste as fertilizer for the garden or orchards at home.

With composting, waste can be used as fertilizer for the garden or orchards at home

The natural fertilizer generated with our waste will also reduce the use of pesticides when caring for our plants.

But how complicated is it to make homemade compost? Simply, you need to have a container to put the waste, like a used wooden box, for example. Next, we will include what we are discarding, such as egg shells, coffee grounds, or fruit skin. And finally, do not forget to exchange dry and wet residues, as well as periodically ventilate the dough.

4. Watch Out For The Water

The need to take care of water is urgent, because as the United Nations indicates in its Report on the development of world water resources 2021: “It is estimated that by 2040 the global water demand could increase by more than 50%”. This shows that changing the way of managing and consuming this resource in a home is also part of the change.

In addition to reducing shower time or buying more efficient appliances, incorporating home systems that reuse water is also a good alternative. In CyberHut homes, as Ceballos explains, resources are used to the maximum: “They store rainwater and relative humidity for daily use, in addition to reusing water from the shower and sink for irrigation purposes.” The same happens in those known as Passivhaus.

5. Sustainable Materials

The green model has to be present from the first moment. That is the design and construction of the building or home. Look among the different alternatives when buying a house for details such as the use of sustainable and durable materials. But not only that: it is also important that the construction process has been carried out in a non-polluting manner.

Although it is not yet generally applied in the construction of houses, there are already spaces, such as fashion stores, built using recycled plastic with 3D printers.

6. From Trash To Decoration

You can manage to decorate your home to your liking with furniture or decoration products that have been produced taking into account the principle of recycling. Some brands are already working on an interior design using recycled plastic, such as Limo Revolution. Thus, it not only contributes to reducing the use of plastics but also gives them a new life.
